Supervise Your Teen's Meta AI Chats on Instagram and Facebook
Learn how to monitor and manage your teen's interactions with Meta AI across Instagram and Facebook using parental supervision tools.
Overview
Meta AI is an artificial intelligence assistant available on Instagram and Facebook that teens can chat with directly. As a parent, you can use Meta's family supervision tools to monitor your teen's AI interactions and set boundaries on how they engage with this feature.
What You Can Supervise
With parental supervision enabled, you can:
- See which AI conversations your teen is having (limited visibility into content)
- Receive reports on their overall AI chat activity
- Limit or restrict AI interactions through privacy controls
- Review account activity and time spent on the platform
Step 1: Set Up Family Supervision (Parent Account)
- Open Instagram or Facebook on your device and log into your own parent account (not your teen's)
- Go to Settings & Privacy (the three-line menu or gear icon)
- Tap Family center or Family & Supervision
- Select Supervise an account or Add a teen
- Follow the prompts to send an invite to your teen (they will receive a notification)
- Your teen must accept the supervision invite from their device
- Once accepted, you will gain visibility into their account activity
Step 2: Review Your Teen's AI Chats
- Return to Family center on your parent account
- Select your teen's profile from the list
- Look for a section labeled AI interactions, Chat activity, or Assistant usage
- Review the summary of conversations (full content visibility may be limited for privacy)
- Check the frequency and duration of AI chat sessions
Step 3: Manage AI Interaction Settings
Restrict or Disable Meta AI
- In Family center, select your teen's account
- Navigate to Privacy & Safety or Supervised Activity
- Look for a setting related to AI chat, Meta AI access, or Third-party bots
- Depending on available controls, you can:
- Disable Meta AI entirely
- Restrict chat to supervised or approved interactions
- Enable warnings when your teen interacts with AI
- Save your changes
Set Time Limits (If Available)
- In Family center, go to Time Management or App Usage
- Set daily time limits for Instagram or Facebook (this affects overall app use, including AI chat)
- Your teen will receive a notification when approaching the limit
Step 4: Enable Account Notifications
- In Family center, find Activity Notifications or Alerts
- Enable notifications for:
- New followers or friend requests
- Account sign-ins from new devices
- Changes to privacy settings
- Potentially, AI chat activity (if available)
- Adjust notification frequency (real-time, daily digest, or weekly summary)
Step 5: Have a Conversation With Your Teen
- Explain why you are supervising their account
- Review the guidelines together about appropriate AI use
- Answer questions about what you can and cannot see
- Set expectations about responsible AI interactions
- Establish consequences for misuse
Important Limitations
- Limited content visibility: You may not see the full text of every AI conversation; Meta prioritizes teen privacy
- AI vs. human contacts: You can see AI interactions separately from peer-to-peer chats
- Accuracy: Reports may be aggregated or summarized rather than showing real-time data
- Settings may change: Meta frequently updates family supervision features; your interface may differ slightly
Do this tonight · 15 min
Send a supervision invite to your teen and agree on ground rules for Meta AI use.
Troubleshooting
The invite wasn't sent or accepted:
- Confirm your teen's account email or phone number is correct
- Ask your teen to check their notifications and accept manually
- Ensure both of you are in the same region/country
You cannot see AI chat activity:
- Confirm supervision is fully active (your teen should show as "Supervised" in Family center)
- Refresh the app or log out and back in
- Check if Meta AI is available in your region (it may be rolled out gradually)
Settings don't match this guide:
- Meta updates its interface frequently
- Go to Settings > Help > Report a Problem if you cannot find specific controls
- Contact Meta Support for the latest family supervision documentation
