Set Up TikTok Family Pairing

Enable TikTok Family Pairing to link your account with your child's and manage their screen time, content recommendations, and direct messaging permissions.

What is TikTok Family Pairing?

TikTok Family Pairing lets you link your account with your child's account (ages 13–17) so you can set limits on screen time, restrict direct messages, adjust content recommendations, and see which accounts they follow. The feature works across iOS and Android devices.

Prerequisites

  • Your account: Must be a regular TikTok account set to an age 18 or older.
  • Child's account: Must already exist and be registered to someone age 13–17.
  • Same Wi-Fi network (initial pairing): Required to link accounts during setup.

Steps to Set Up Family Pairing

Parent's Device

  1. Open TikTok and go to Profile (bottom-right icon).
  2. Tap the Menu icon (three lines, top-right).
  3. Select Settings and privacy.
  4. Tap Family pairing (or look under Account and security if the menu structure has shifted).
  5. Tap Create a family pairing or Pair with a family member.
  6. Choose I'm the parent.
  7. You will see a pairing code (usually a 6–8 digit code) displayed on screen. Keep this code ready—you'll share it with your child.

Child's Device

  1. Open TikTok and go to Profile.
  2. Tap the Menu icon.
  3. Select Settings and privacy.
  4. Tap Family pairing.
  5. Tap Join a family pairing or Pair with a family member.
  6. Choose I'm the teen.
  7. Enter the pairing code your parent provided.
  8. Confirm the pairing request on your device.

Parent Approval

Once the code is entered:

  1. A pairing request will appear on your parent account.
  2. Open the notification or go back to Family pairing settings.
  3. Tap Approve to confirm the link.

The accounts are now paired.

Managing Parental Controls After Pairing

Once linked, you can manage these settings from your parent account:

Screen Time Limits

  1. Go to ProfileMenuSettings and privacy.
  2. Tap Family pairing.
  3. Select your teen's name.
  4. Tap Screen time and set a daily limit (e.g., 60 minutes).
  5. Choose whether your teen can extend time after the limit is reached (if allowed, they must ask for approval).

Direct Messages

  1. In Family pairing settings, select your teen.
  2. Tap Direct messages.
  3. Choose from:
    • No one: Messages are disabled.
    • Friends only: Only accounts your teen follows can message them.
    • Everyone: Anyone can message (default).

Content Preferences

  1. Select your teen in Family pairing.
  2. Tap Explore videos or Recommended videos.
  3. Toggle restrictions to limit suggestions in categories like mature content, violence, or other topics.

Restricted Mode

  1. In your teen's paired settings, tap Restricted Mode.
  2. Toggle On to limit videos based on age-appropriateness.

View Activity

  1. Go to Family pairing and select your teen.
  2. Look for Accounts you follow or Following list to see which creators they follow.
  3. Note: You cannot see individual videos watched, but you can monitor follower activity.

Note: Exact menu names may vary slightly depending on your TikTok app version. If you don't see an option, check Settings and privacyAccount and security first.

What Happens on Your Teen's Device?

Once paired, your teen will see:

  • A Family pairing badge or indicator on their profile (confirming the pairing is active).
  • Screen time notifications when approaching their limit.
  • Restricted messaging or content based on your settings.
  • A prompt to ask permission if they want to extend screen time.

Tips & Best Practices

  • Keep codes private: Only share the pairing code with your child; don't screenshot or leave it visible.
  • Revisit settings monthly: As your teen matures, adjust screen time and content restrictions accordingly.
  • Have a conversation: Explain why you're setting limits so they understand the intent isn't punishment.
  • Test the pairing: Send a direct message to your teen's account from another account to verify messaging restrictions work as expected.

Troubleshooting

  • Code expired: If your teen doesn't enter the code within a few minutes, generate a new one.
  • Pairing fails: Ensure both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network during initial setup.
  • Settings not syncing: Log out and back into the TikTok app on both devices.
  • Still can't find Family Pairing: The feature may not be available in your region yet, or your app may need updating. Check the App Store or Google Play for the latest version.

Ending a Family Pairing

If you need to unlink accounts:

  1. Go to ProfileSettings and privacyFamily pairing.
  2. Select your teen's name.
  3. Tap Remove or End family pairing (exact wording may vary).
  4. Confirm the removal.

Both accounts will be unpaired immediately. Your teen can create a new account or pair with another parent.
